A Day at School

Reading Passage

田中たなかみきは学生がくせいです。十五歳じゅうごさいです。毎日まいにち学校がっこうへいきます。学校がっこうがとてもすきです。

今日きょうは月曜日げつようびです。みきは七時しちじにおきます。そして、顔かおをあらいます。朝あさごはんをたべます。みきの朝あさごはんはごはんとたまごとみそしるです。おいしいです。

八時はちじに学校がっこうへいきます。みきは自転車じてんしゃでいきます。学校がっこうまで十分じゅっぷんです。外そとはいいてんきです。みきはうれしいです。

学校がっこうで、みきはともだちのゆきにあいます。「おはようございます」とふたりはいいます。いっしょに教室きょうしつへはいります。教室きょうしつにはたくさんのともだちがいます。

九時くじに授業じゅぎょうがはじまります。はじめの授業じゅぎょうは日本語にほんごです。みきは日本語にほんごがすきです。先生せんせいはやさしいです。みきはひらがなをかきます。すこしむずかしいですが、たのしいです。みきはいっしょうけんめいかきます。

十二時じゅうにじにひるごはんをたべます。みきはゆきといっしょにたべます。ひるごはんはサンドイッチです。ふたりはたくさんはなします。みきはたのしいです。

午後ごごは英語えいごとすうがくの授業じゅぎょうがあります。すうがくはすこしむずかしいです。みきは先生せんせいにしつもんします。先生せんせいはていねいにおしえます。みきはよくわかります。

三時さんじに学校がっこうがおわります。みきはともだちとさようならをいいます。そして、図書館としょかんへいきます。図書館としょかんで本ほんをよみます。みきはほんがだいすきです。きょうはどうぶつの本ほんをよみます。とてもおもしろいです。

四時よじにいえへかえります。おかあさんがいます。「おかえり」とおかあさんはいいます。「ただいま」とみきはいいます。おかあさんはおやつをくれます。みきはよろこんでたべます。

ばんごはんのあとで、みきはしゅくだいをします。しゅくだいは日本語にほんごの漢字かんじのれんしゅうです。みきはゆっくりていねいにかきます。漢字かんじはむずかしいですが、みきはがんばります。

九時くじにねます。「あしたも学校がっこうがあるよ」とみきはおもいます。みきは学校がっこうがすきです。まいにちとてもたのしいです。

English Translation

Miki Tanaka is fifteen years old and a student who loves going to school every day.

Today is Monday. Miki wakes up at seven, washes her face, and sits down for breakfast — rice, egg, and miso soup. Warm and filling, it's the perfect way to start the morning.

She hops on her bicycle at eight o'clock for the ten-minute ride to school. The sky is clear and the weather lovely. Miki pedals along with a big smile.

At school, she runs into her friend Yuki. "Good morning!" they say together, then walk into the classroom side by side. Their classmates are already gathered inside.

Class begins at nine. First up is Japanese — Miki's favorite subject. The teacher is kind and encouraging, and today's task is writing hiragana. The characters take some effort to get right, but she finds every minute of it fun.

Noon brings lunchtime. Miki and Yuki eat their sandwiches together, talking and laughing until it's time to head back. It's the highlight of the school day.

The afternoon brings English and math. When math gets tricky, Miki raises her hand to ask a question. Her teacher explains patiently, and just like that, it clicks.

School ends at three. After saying goodbye to her friends, Miki heads to the library and loses herself in a book about animals. She loves reading, and this one is especially captivating.

Back home at four, her mother greets her with "Welcome home!" and hands her a snack. Miki digs in happily.

After dinner, Miki tackles her homework: kanji practice. She writes each character slowly and carefully. The strokes are challenging, but she keeps at it.

By nine o'clock she's in bed, thinking, "School again tomorrow." That thought doesn't bother her one bit — every day there is a good one.
