海 — Sea, Ocean

N4
On: カイ
Kun: うみ

Meaning

Whether you are looking at a map of Japan or planning a summer trip, you will see the character 海 everywhere. Japan is an island nation, so the sea is central to its food, history, and daily life. This Grade 2 kanji appears on the N4 level of the JLPT. It is a fundamental character for anyone moving beyond the most basic level of Japanese study.

Structurally, 海 is a phono-semantic compound. The left side features the sanzui radical (氵), which represents water. This radical appears in almost every kanji related to liquids. The right side, 每 (mai), is often interpreted as containing the kanji for mother (母). This creates a poetic image: the sea as the mother of all life. In daily use, this kanji refers to the physical ocean and appears in many terms related to international affairs and foreign travel.

Memory Tip

Focus on the components: Water (氵) and Mother (母). Think of the phrase: "Water is the mother of the sea." Since all life is said to have originated in the ocean, this connection helps you remember why the radical and the right side are paired together. Another trick: you can see "Every" (毎) on the right. Imagine that "Every" drop of water eventually finds its way back to the sea.
