術 — Art, Technique, Skill, Method

N3
On: ジュツ
Kun: すべ

Meaning

術 means art, technique, skill, method, and means. The underlying idea is a learned ability shaped through practice — not just knowing something, but being able to do it with precision and ease. Raw knowledge doesn't count as 術. The refinement that comes from actually doing something, repeatedly, until it becomes second nature does.

The character is built from two parts. The outer frame is (ゆきがまえ), a radical depicting a road or passageway. The inner component is , an old character for a millet plant or medicinal herb — something cultivated along a path. Together they suggest a path of mastery: discipline walked until skill takes root. Compare this with (dō / michi), which centers on the journey as philosophy. 術 is more concrete — the technique itself, not the road traveled to get there.

術 has 11 strokes, is taught in Grade 5 of elementary school, and sits at JLPT N3. It appears in compound words across art, medicine, technology, martial arts, and fiction.

Readings

On'yomi (音読み) — Chinese-derived readings

The on'yomi is ジュツ (jutsu). Nearly every compound uses it. It comes from the old Chinese pronunciation and almost never appears in isolation.

ジュツ turns up across very different fields:

  • 技術ぎじゅつ (gijutsu) — technology, technical skill; the compound you'll see most often in news and business writing
  • 手術しゅじゅつ (shujutsu) — surgical operation; literally "hand technique," used daily in medical contexts
  • 芸術げいじゅつ (geijutsu) — the fine arts; painting, music, literature of high aesthetic value
  • 美術びじゅつ (bijutsu) — visual arts; the word on every art museum sign in Japan
  • 戦術せんじゅつ (senjutsu) — tactics; the art of planning a battle or competitive strategy

Kun'yomi (訓読み) — Native Japanese readings

The kun'yomi is すべ (sube), meaning "way," "means," or "method." Rare in everyday speech, it survives mainly in literary and classical writing — almost always in negative constructions about being completely at a loss.

  • すべもなく (sube mo naku) — helplessly, with no means available
  • 為す術なすすべもない (nasu sube mo nai) — there's nothing one can do; utterly stuck

In practice, you're far more likely to encounter ジュツ than すべ. Master the compounds first.

Memory Tip

Picture 術 as a skilled traveler moving through a walled corridor. The outer component forms the walls — a road, a passage, forward motion. Inside sits , like a plant growing in that sheltered space. The image: someone walking a defined path while carefully cultivating their craft.

If you've read Naruto or any ninja manga, you already know the word "jutsu" — those are 術, techniques built through years of training. Every 術 compound carries that same nuance: a skill that had to be earned, not just studied.
