Meaning
The kanji 環 means ring or circle — something that loops back on itself into a closed, continuous shape. The image behind it is a circular jade ring, which ancient East Asian cultures valued as a symbol of completeness and eternity.
環 is built from two parts. On the left sits 王, standing in for the radical 玉 (jade or jewel). On the right is 睘, a phonetic component that contributes the reading カン. A precious jade ring — the meaning writes itself.
From that core image, the character has extended to cover surrounding, encircling, and cycling. Its most common modern form is 環境 (environment) — the world that rings around us on all sides. The word appears constantly in news, textbooks, and everyday conversation about ecology, geography, and social systems.
環 has 17 strokes and sits at grade 8 in Japan's Joyo kanji list — secondary school level, not elementary. It appears on the JLPT N2 exam.
Readings
On'yomi (音読み) — Chinese-derived readings
The only on'yomi is カン, and it covers nearly every compound you'll encounter. This reading came from ancient Chinese and has been part of formal Japanese for centuries.
Compounds using カン:
- 環境 (kankyō) — environment, surroundings
- 循環 (junkan) — circulation, cycle, loop
- 一環 (ikkan) — a link in a chain, part of a whole
- 環状 (kanjō) — ring-shaped, circular, annular
- 環礁 (kanshō) — atoll, coral reef ring
Kun'yomi (訓読み) — Native Japanese readings
The kun'yomi readings are rare. たまき refers to an ancient jade armband found mostly in classical literature and poetry. めぐ.る (to go around, to circulate) exists but usually gets written with 巡る instead.
- 環 (tamaki) — jade armband (classical)
- 環る (meguru) — to go around, to circulate
For N2 purposes, カン is what matters. The kun'yomi are worth recognizing but rarely tested.

Memory Tip
Picture 環 as a jade ring. The left side, 王, hints at 玉 (jewel) — the material it's made from. The right side, 睘, gives the reading カン. Hold up a round jade ring and look through its hollow center. That loop with no beginning and no end is what this kanji is about.
When you see 環境, picture the world as a ring wrapped around you — above, below, on every side. You live inside that ring. The environment doesn't just sit nearby; it encircles you completely.
